An Honor to the Swings and Understudies

Last night, the show’s host, DeBose, announced that this year’s Tony Awards would also honor the understudies and swings who helped Broadway get through this Covid-plagued season.

DeBose provided this clarification in response to a tweet from Kate Shindle, the president of Actors’ Equity, and she refuted the claims made on social media that the understudies in this year’s festivities were ignorant.

Shindle’s assurances were repeated by DeBose, who added, “To all parties involved, all I can ask is that you maintain the faith and trust. I am working nonstop to deliver everyone a lovely celebration of everyone’s labor of love.

Hugh Jackman, Uzo Aduba, Billy Crystal, Ron Cephas Jones, and many others are among the nominees for this year.
